An Overview of Civil Commitment Law and Changes Made by the 2008 General Assembly

Overview

This one-and-a-half day program will cover legislative changes made in the civil commitment process as well as examine issues that arise out of the work done by the Commonwealth of Virginia Commission on Mental Health Law Reform and the Virginia Tech Review Panel.

The training will provide basic information on obtaining emergency custody and temporary detention orders and the legal criteria and procedures involved in the commitment of adults and juveniles.

Other topics to be addressed include medical screenings, the impact of EMTALA, transportation issues, outpatient civil commitment, and the role of law enforcement, special justices, and magistrates.
