Daniel Murrie, PhD serves as Director of Psychology at the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy and as an Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Dr. Murrie's teaching duties at the ILPPP involve training community and hospital-based clinicians in forensic evaluation, and supervising the ILPPP's psychiatric, post-doctoral, and practicum trainees. He also teaches a course on mental health and juvenile justice in the School of Law.
Within the ILPPP's forensic clinic, Dr. Murrie performs criminal and civil forensic psychological evaluations of juveniles and adults. These often include questions of competence, legal sanity, sexual violence, violence risk, sentencing issues, or waiver of legal rights.
As a researcher, Dr. Murrie has published on a number of topics related to forensic evaluation, psychopathy, diagnostic labeling, and juvenile justice. His current research involves risk assessment among sexual offenders, psychological assessment within the juvenile justice system, and projects addressing bias and quality improvement in forensic evaluations.
