Richard J. Bonnie, L.L.B.

Richard J. Bonnie has served as the Institute's director since 1979, and was appointed John S. Battle Professor of Law in 1987. Prof. Bonnie is an expert in the fields of criminal law and procedure, mental health and drug law, public health law, and bioethics.

Bruce J. Cohen, M.D.

Dr. Cohen is an Associate Professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Virginia. He is board-certified in both General Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. He directs the Forensic Psychiatry Residency Training Program.

Thomas L. Hafemeister, J.D., Ph.D.

Thomas Hafemeister, the Director of Legal Studies at the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy, teaches Infectious Diseases and the Law, Mental Health Law, and Psychiatry and Criminal Law.

Shelly L. Jackson, Ph.D.

Shelly Jackson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and Director of Grants and Program Development at the Institute. Her work over the past 13 years has focused on family violence. 

John T. Monahan, Ph.D.

John Monahan, a psychologist, has been on the Law School faculty since 1980. He holds courtesy appointments as a Professor of Psychology in Arts and Sciences, and as a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences in the Medical School. He now holds the John S. Shannon Distinguished Professorship in Law.

Daniel Murrie, Ph.D.

Daniel Murrie serves as Director of Psychology the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy and as an Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. 

Eileen Ryan, D.O.

Dr. Eileen P. Ryan is Associate Professor of Psychiatric Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She serves as the Institute's Medical Director, and also directs the Forensic Child Psychiatry Clinic.

Janet I. Warren, D.S.W

Janet I. Warren, D.S.W., is Professor of Clinical Psychiatric Medicine and Associate Director of the Institute. She is the University of Virginia's liaison to the Behavioral Sciences Unit of the FBI, an associate at Park Dietz and Associates, and a practicing psychoanalyst in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Lynn Boyter

Lynn Daidone Boyter serves as Institute Administrator and Coordinator of the Forensic Psychiatry Clinic.  She is responsible for fiscal management, budget planning and development, program staffing, and facility management.

Edward L. Strickler Jr., M.A., M.P.H.

Edward Strickler, Jr., is Programs Coordinator of the Institute and Managing Editor of Developments in Mental Health Law. He has completed Masters' degrees at the University of Virginia in the fields of Religious Ethics, Clinical Ethics, and most recently a M.P.H. in the Department of Public Health Sciences.
