Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits in Category 1 of the American Medical Association are approved for most programs through the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and are available for most programs.  

The cost per CME Category 1 contact hour for physicians is $12 for programs approved for Category 1. Continuing Education Units (CEU) are available for non-physicians through the same Office of Continuing Medical Education at a cost of $10 per contact hour.  

The Office of Continuing Medical Education requires publication of the following statements:

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services, with the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy of the University of Virginia.  

The University of Virginia School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Virginia School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of (variable) hours in AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM.  

Physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The University of Virginia School of Medicine awards 0.1 CEU per contact hour to each non-physician participant who successfully completes this educational activity.

The CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is a nationally recognized unit of measure for continuing education and training activities that meet specific educational planning requirements.  

The Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services maintains a permanent record of participants who have been awarded CEUs.
