Training Services

The Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy offers diverse forensic and civil training programs to DMHMRSAS and CSB staff and to the general public. The one- to five-day forensic training programs, designed to address adult and juvenile clients separately, cover basic forensic practice as well as the various code-mandated forensic evaluations, including adjudicative competence, legal sanity, and risk assessment. Forensic training programs also cover evaluation of sex offenders, defendants charged with capital murder, and individuals acquitted as Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.

Civil training programs, aimed at legal and mental health professionals of all kinds, address such general topics as informed consent and confidentiality of mental health records. The Institute also sponsors and arranges semi-annual one-day symposia on topics related to mental health law.

Training programs offered by the Institute are funded by and developed in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services, the Virginia Office of the Attorney General, and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
