"Kirk Heilbrun is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology in 1980 from the University of Texas at Austin, and completed postdoctoral fellowship training from 1981-82 in psychology and criminal justice at Florida State University. His current research focuses on juvenile and adult offenders, legal decision-making, forensic evaluation associated with such decision-making, and youth mentoring programs. His practice interests also center around forensic assessment, and he directs a practicum within the department in this area. He is board certified in Clinical Psychology and in Forensic Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology, and is a past president of both the American Psychology-Law Psychology/APA Division 41, and the American Board of Forensic Psychology."

Program Description

This one-day symposium will discuss managing violence risk in the community, across a variety of settings with a variety of populations.  The program will be particularly relevant to clinicians who work with forensic psychiatric patients or criminal offenders. The program will conclude with an expert panel discussing risk management in a variety of Virginia agencies and institutions.

The program agenda begins with Registration and Morning Refreshments at 8:30 AM, Welcome at 9:15, and Adjournment at 4:15 PM.  Lunch will be from 12:00 to 1:00 and will be provided as part of the program registration.  Dr Heilbrun will speak on the following topics: Risk-Needs Assessment, General  Considerations and Relevant Measures; Continuity Between Hospital and Community; Community Interventions; and Risk-Relevant Decisions.

This program will be held at the Crowne Plaza Richmond West Hotel, 6531 W. Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230 on October 14, 2011, beginning at 8:30 AM for Registration and Morning Refrehsments, with the formal program proceeding from Welcome at 9:15 AM to 4:15 PM adjournment.

A 'Courtesy Block' of rooms for the night of October 13 have been made available by the Crowne Plaza Richmond West, at the discounted 'state rate' of $87 plus 13% tax. Individuals may request the 'UVA group rate' when making reservations. These reservations must be made by October 7 to receive the discounted rate. Guests are responsible for payment of their individual rooms. Lodging is not the responsibility of the meeting organizers.
